Kim Sung-ryung Confesses to Living Apart from Husband “I Drink Alone Every Night”
On Dec 7th, a video titled “Timeless Beauty Kim Sung-ryung! Secrets to Maintaining Her Beauty Revealed for the First Time” was posted on the YouTube channel “A-Class Jang Young-ran”.
Jang Young-ran introduced guest Kim Sung-ryung, “A top actress I deeply respect and want to emulate. We’ll delve into everything about her.”
Kim Sung-ryung matched Jang Young-ran’s dance moves with enthusiasm, lightening the mood from the start.
Kim Sung-ryung recounted her journey, starting with winning the Miss Korea title, followed by hosting “Entertainment Weekly” and acting in the film “Who Saw the Dragon’s Claws?”. She revealed she worked tirelessly without a break, earning rookie awards for “Who Saw the Dragon’s Claws?” but experiencing a 16-year hiatus from cinema due to a jinx.
She said her major breakthrough came with the drama “The Chaser”, followed by “King of Ambition” and “The Heirs”, which marked the peak of her career. Despite her extensive work, she noted, “It wasn’t until then that people really started recognizing me. Even though I worked a lot, I wasn’t truly remembered.”
Kim Sung-ryung candidly shared a turning point in her life, “At some point, I was hit in the back of the head. After giving birth, I wanted to show that a mom could still be cool and inspiring. That’s when I think I matured. My husband would tease me, calling me an unfulfilled celebrity. I decided to take things seriously, so in my mid-30s, I transferred to Kyung Hee University’s Department of Theater and Film. I had never formally studied acting, so I thought it was necessary. I even graduated while pregnant with my second child.”
Kim Sung-ryung added, “Having kids changed my life—it was like night and day. I realized the acting I’d done before was fake. When I worked on ‘The King and the Queen’, I gave it my all like never before.”
Kim Sung-ryung shared that she now lives alone in Seoul while her husband resides in Busan, enjoying her solitude with occasional “solo drinking”. As the mother of two sons in their 20s, she joked about not knowing where they sleep, displaying her relaxed parenting style.
When asked about her husband in Busan, Kim Sung-ryung admitted, “Lately, I feel guilty because I haven’t taken good care of him. Whenever we call, he always sounds like he’s struggling, like, ‘I’m not feeling well.’ I sometimes wonder if he regrets marrying me.”
When Jang Young-ran suggested she spend her downtime in Busan, Kim Sung-ryung replied, “I’d be too bored. I already lived with my mother-in-law for three years during our newlywed period. I’ve lived in Busan enough.” Jang Young-ran commended Kim Sung-ryung for her positivity, acknowledging how difficult it is to live with in-laws.
